Can a Simple Food Like Peanuts Be Linked to Longevity?

When we think about foods for healthy aging, peanuts probably aren't the first thing that comes to mind. Maybe they should get a little more attention.

Over the past decade, large studies have found a surprisingly consistent pattern: people who regularly eat nuts, including peanuts, tend to have a lower risk of premature death.[1–5] Researchers call this all-cause mortality. It simply means death from any cause.

It's a useful outcome because it goes beyond individual health markers. Lower cholesterol is good. Better blood glucose is good. But ultimately, longevity research asks a much bigger question: are people actually living longer? For peanuts, the data are interesting.

What Did Researchers Find?

One of the most important relevant studies was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.[1] Researchers followed 76,464 women and 42,498 men for up to 30 years. During that time, more than 27,000 participants died. The more often people ate nuts, the lower their risk of death tended to be.

Compared with people who didn't eat nuts, those eating them seven or more times per week had about a 20% lower risk of death during follow-up.[1] The pattern wasn't limited to tree nuts. When the researchers looked separately at peanuts and tree nuts, both showed similar associations.[1] That raised an obvious question. Could nut eaters simply have healthier lifestyles?

What About Peanuts Specifically?

A second major study gives us a useful answer.[2] Instead of studying mostly health professionals, researchers looked at more than 200,000 adults from the southeastern United States and Shanghai, China. This is particularly useful for understanding peanuts.

About half of the nuts consumed in the US group were peanuts, while the Chinese studies specifically measured peanut consumption. The results?

People with the highest intake had approximately 21% lower mortality in the US population and 17% lower mortality in the Chinese populations compared with those eating the least.[2] These were very different groups of people living very different lifestyles. Yet the association appeared in both. That's one reason the peanut-longevity connection has attracted attention.

What Happens When We Look at Many Studies Together?

No single nutrition study should settle a question. Meta-analyses are helpful because they combine results from multiple studies.

A 2017 meta-analysis included 18 prospective studies and more than 81,000 deaths.[3] Higher nut consumption was associated with a 19% lower risk of all-cause mortality. More importantly for peanuts, the researchers analyzed them separately. Peanuts and tree nuts showed similar associations with mortality.[3]

Another major dose-response analysis included more than 800,000 participants in its all-cause mortality analysis. A 28-gram-per-day increase in nut consumption was associated with a 22% lower relative risk of death.[4]

That doesn't mean everyone needs 28 grams every day.. Much of the reduction in risk appeared at relatively modest intakes.[3,4] In the 2017 analysis, mortality risk appeared to level off at about three servings of nuts per week (around 12 g/day).[3] More isn't necessarily better. Consistency may matter more.

Why Might Peanuts Be Good for Long-Term Health?

There's probably no single “longevity ingredient” hiding inside a peanut. Instead, peanuts bring several useful nutrients together in one food.

Mostly Unsaturated Fats

Peanuts contain fat, but most of it is unsaturated.[6,7] Replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat is associated with a healthier blood lipid profile and better cardiovascular health.[6,7] That's relevant because cardiovascular disease remains one of the major causes of premature death.

Plant Protein and Fiber

Peanuts are also a useful source of plant protein and fiber.[6,8] Protein can contribute to fullness and maintenance of lean body mass, while fiber plays a role in digestive and metabolic health.

More Than Macronutrients

Peanuts also provide vitamin E, niacin, folate, magnesium, copper, phytosterols, and polyphenols.[6–8] These nutrients and bioactive compounds may influence cholesterol metabolism, blood vessel function, oxidative stress, and inflammation.[6,7] Rather than one “superfood” compound, it's probably this nutritional package that makes peanuts interesting.

Heart Health May Explain Part of the Story

The longevity findings become easier to understand when we look at cardiovascular disease. Across prospective studies and meta-analyses, higher nut consumption has repeatedly been associated with lower cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease risk.[3,4,9,10]

In the 18-study mortality meta-analysis, higher nut consumption was associated with 25% lower cardiovascular mortality and 27% lower coronary heart disease mortality.[3]

The large US and Chinese peanut study also found a lower risk of cardiovascular death among people consuming more peanuts and nuts.[2]

In the PREDIMED cohort, participants who consumed nuts more than three times per week also had lower all-cause mortality than non-consumers.[12]

This doesn't mean peanuts prevent heart disease by themselves. A person's overall diet, activity, smoking, body weight, sleep, genetics, and medical care matter far more than any single food. But peanuts can fit comfortably into a heart-healthy eating pattern.

Aren't Peanuts Too High in Calories?

Peanuts are calorie-dense. That's true. But calorie-dense and unhealthy aren't the same thing.

Peanuts provide protein and fiber, nutrients that are associated with greater satiety.[11] Research has also found that regular nut consumption doesn't necessarily produce the weight gain we might predict simply by looking at calorie content.[11] Portion size still matters.

A small handful of peanuts is very different from eating straight from a large bag without paying attention to quantity. And preparation matters too. Added chocolate, sugar, oils, or salt change the nutritional profile of the finished snack.

Does This Prove Peanuts Make You Live Longer?

No. And that's the most important limitation of this research. Most of the evidence comes from observational studies.

Researchers record what people eat, follow them for years, and compare health outcomes. They adjust for things like smoking, physical activity, body weight, alcohol intake, and overall diet. But they can never control every difference between people.

So we shouldn't say:

“Eating peanuts will make you live longer.”

What the evidence supports is more measured:

People who regularly consume peanuts and nuts consistently show lower all-cause mortality across large population studies.[1–5]

That's still a meaningful finding.

A Small Food With a Surprisingly Big Research Base

Healthy aging isn't built around one food. It's the result of what we eat and do repeatedly over years.

Peanuts happen to make that easier. They're affordable, convenient, naturally rich in plant protein and unsaturated fats, and easy to include in everyday eating. And unlike many foods surrounded by “longevity” hype, peanuts have something valuable behind them: decades of population research involving hundreds of thousands of people.

For someone who enjoys peanuts, a peanut-forward snack can be another convenient way to include them in the diet.

Products such as Circ Bites combine peanuts with chocolate in a portable format. They shouldn't be viewed as a shortcut to longevity—the research is about peanuts and dietary patterns, not any individual snack product.

But they can make a well-studied food easier, and perhaps more enjoyable, to eat regularly.

Sometimes healthy eating really can be that simple.
