Can Peanuts Be Good for Your Brain?
Peanuts don't usually get much attention as a “brain food.” Yet they have an interesting nutritional profile. They provide mostly unsaturated fats, plant protein, fiber, niacin, vitamin E, magnesium, and a range of natural plant compounds.[2,3]
More importantly, researchers have tested peanuts directly rather than simply assuming that findings from other nuts apply to them. The results are worth a closer look.
What Happened When People Ate Peanuts Every Day?
The strongest peanut-specific evidence comes from the ARISTOTLE study, published in Clinical Nutrition in 2021.[1] Healthy young adults were randomly assigned to eat one of three products every day for six months:
- 25 g of skin-roasted peanuts
- 32 g of peanut butter
- 32 g of a control butter made from peanut oil
The control provided similar fat and calories but did not contain the fiber and phenolic compounds found in the peanut products.[1] Sixty-three participants completed the trial. Researchers tested memory and other aspects of cognitive function. They also measured anxiety, depression, polyphenol intake, and compounds produced by gut bacteria.[1]
Did Memory Improve?
There were some encouraging results. After six months, immediate memory improved from baseline in both the skin-roasted peanut and peanut butter groups.[1]
That doesn't mean peanuts improved every aspect of cognition. They didn't. Changes across the other cognitive tests were less consistent. So the study isn't evidence that peanuts suddenly make us smarter. It does, however, suggest that regular peanut consumption may influence certain aspects of memory.
Peanuts and Anxiety
The trial produced another interesting finding. Participants eating skin-roasted peanuts had significantly lower anxiety scores than the control group after six months.[1]
Researchers also found relationships between memory, stress response, peanut polyphenols, and metabolites produced by gut bacteria.[1] Those findings may help explain what was happening, although they don't prove the mechanism.
Why Might Peanuts Affect the Brain?
There probably isn't one ingredient responsible. Peanuts contain a mix of nutrients and bioactive compounds that could contribute in different ways.[2,3]
Mostly Unsaturated Fat
Most of the fat in peanuts is unsaturated.[2,3] That's relevant because brain health is closely tied to cardiovascular health. The brain depends on a healthy blood supply for oxygen and nutrients.
Nut consumption has been associated with several cardiovascular benefits, making vascular health one possible link between nuts and healthy brain aging.[4]
Polyphenols
Peanuts also contain polyphenols, including p-coumaric acid.[1–3] These plant compounds are studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
In the peanut trial, polyphenol intake was associated with measures of memory and stress response.[1] It's an interesting clue, but not proof that polyphenols themselves produced the improvements.
The Gut May Be Part of the Story
Brain health isn't only about what happens inside the brain. Some dietary polyphenols reach the large intestine, where they interact with gut bacteria.[5] Fiber can also be fermented by these bacteria.
One result is the production of short-chain fatty acids, commonly called SCFAs. These compounds are being studied as part of the gut-brain axis—the communication network linking the digestive system and the brain.[5,6]
In the ARISTOTLE trial, memory and stress-related measures were correlated with fecal SCFA levels.[1] We don't yet know how important this connection is. But it gives researchers another possible explanation for the results.
What Do Larger Studies Tell Us?
One small clinical trial can't give us the whole picture. That's where larger studies of nut consumption become useful.
A 2023 study followed 6,630 adults aged 55–75 years old.[7] People with higher nut consumption showed more favorable changes in general cognitive performance over two years.[7]
The association appeared in people eating three to fewer than seven servings per week and in those eating seven or more servings, compared with people eating less than one serving per week.[7]
There's an important limitation: this study examined nuts overall, not peanuts alone. It was also observational, so it shows an association rather than cause and effect.
A Study Where Peanuts Dominated
Another study gets us closer to peanuts specifically. Researchers followed 4,822 Chinese adults aged 55 years and older.[8] Peanuts accounted for 84.2% of the nuts consumed in this population.[8]
People eating at least 10 g of nuts per day had better overall cognitive scores. They were also about 40% less likely to have poor cognitive function than people who didn't eat nuts, after researchers adjusted for several health and lifestyle factors.[8]
A separate study of older Chinese adults also linked dietary patterns containing nuts, fruits, and vegetables with better cognitive function.[9] These findings strengthen the case for further research. They still don't prove that peanuts were responsible for the difference.
What About Dementia?
This is where careful wording matters. A very recently published (2026) study pooled data from three prospective cohorts involving 17,349 middle-aged and older adults.[11]
During follow-up, 992 participants developed dementia. Compared with people who reported no nut consumption, those eating 0.1–5 g per day had a 20% lower risk of dementia. Intake above 5 g per day was associated with a 24% lower risk.[11] The study included both peanuts and tree nuts.[11]
These are notable results, but they remain observational. People who eat nuts may differ from non-consumers in other ways that affect dementia risk. We therefore cannot conclude that peanuts prevent Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.
Nuts Fit Into a Bigger Dietary Pattern
There's another piece of evidence worth considering. In the PREDIMED randomized trial, older adults at cardiovascular risk followed a Mediterranean diet supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil or mixed nuts, or a control diet.[10]
The Mediterranean-diet groups had better cognitive outcomes during follow-up.[10] This doesn't isolate the effect of peanuts—or even nuts. The intervention involved an entire dietary pattern. But that's also a useful reminder. Brain health is unlikely to depend on one food.
How Many Peanuts Should You Eat?
We don't have a proven “brain-health dose.” The ARISTOTLE trial used 25 g of skin-roasted peanuts per day.[1] That's about a small handful.
The peanut butter group ate 32 g per day, or roughly two tablespoons.[1] These amounts tell us what researchers tested. They shouldn't be interpreted as a prescription for preventing memory loss.
Keep the Evidence in Perspective
Peanut research is promising, but still fairly young. The ARISTOTLE trial was small and involved healthy adults aged 18–33 years.[1] It lasted six months, and the intervention wasn't blinded.
Long-term studies of cognition and dementia are mostly observational.[7–9,11] That's why claims such as “peanuts prevent dementia” or “peanuts improve your memory” go beyond the evidence.
A better summary is simpler:
Peanuts contain nutrients and plant compounds relevant to brain health, and early clinical and observational research suggests that regular consumption may support certain aspects of cognitive health.[1–4,7,8]
Where Do Peanuts Fit?
Peanuts aren't a miracle food, and they don't need to be. They're an affordable source of healthy fats, plant protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols.[2,3]
